My alter ego was born when I was offered a three-book series by a major publisher for whom I hadn’t worked yet. I was sent an advance copy of the first book, and I did the Ctrl+F test as I do with all books I’m offered. I open the PDF, hit Ctrl+F, and search for certain telltale words that take me right to any intimate scenes. I read through the scenes and make sure the sex is consensual (if it’s not, I turn down the project unless the author is exploring sexual trauma in a responsible way). This series went right up to that line and was the first BDSM content I had ever encountered in my work. I asked the producer if it would be ok to use a pseudonym and he said sure, just let me know the name and we’ll inform the publisher.Ĭoming up with a name is fun but also something narrators should be intentional about, because once you create a pseudonym, you are actually creating another brand, with her own portfolio, marketing, and social media. I looked up the name I was thinking of online, to make sure there wasn’t another narrator already using it. After doing my due diligence, I settled on a combination of my high school Spanish class name with a wild-animal-inspired last name, and wham-bam, I was an erotica narrator. When do I use my pseudonym? I narrate a lot of explicit romance under my own name, so it’s not the sexual content per se. In general I use the pseudonym to signal to listeners that a book is either a) more sexually adventurous in terms of BDSM or similar themes, or b) that the story gets into content that may be disturbing to listeners who have experienced sexual trauma. I’ve heard from listeners that when they’re in the mood for one of “her” books, the consistency of the branding helps them find just what they’re looking for. She’s won AudioFile Magazine’s Earphones Award on a couple of occasions, and even shared an Audie Award (often referred to as the Oscars of Audiobooks) for best Erotica narration in 2017, along with co-narrator Sebastian York, for Marriage Games by CD Reiss. Before 2017, I was much more strict about keeping the two identities separate. After the awards, and since my kids aren’t little anymore, I relaxed about it, especially in closed, well-moderated facebook groups like Aural Fixation and Talk Dirty To Me. Literacy, animal welfare, or even women's causes will be considered. These days it’s pretty easy to connect the dots if you’re even an amateur Googler. I am also thinking that any money made from this site or the group will go to a charity. Any links (other than the Yorkies group) might be used to raise funds for this site, prizes for the group and any other things we might like. We're trying to design something that screams sexy unicorn without being cheesy. I'm going to be offering some swag soon too. "We can call ourselves Yorkies!" and right there, the name stuck. The name was something that was said on the group. I'm now meeting people in that group who love listening to him and we're just over 400 members. You see, when I found him and that god given voice of his, I knew no other people who liked him or his voice. The main link over there <- is to my fan group. Permission from the people who have it, I might try to get a picture of his feet. Out there, and I will only really post pictures of unicorns instead of his face. Am I right? I made this little corner of the interwebs to find others who love him as much as I do. If he hates it, I will freely hand over the domain to him. If he likes it and gives his blessing, I will make it official. Unless I hear from Sebastian himself, this is how this site will be.
